Job Summary
We are seeking an experienced STATCOM Specialist to conduct technical condition assessments and performance evaluations of Static Synchronous Compensator (STATCOM) systems and associated Voltage Source Converter (VSC) technology. The role involves assessing converter modules, IGBT/GTO valves, DC-link systems, cooling, control and protection systems to ensure reliable dynamic reactive power compensation, voltage stability and operational performance.
Roles & Responsibilities
Conduct condition assessments of STATCOM installations, converter modules and balance-of-plant equipment.
Inspect IGBT/GTO valves, DC-link systems, cooling systems, transformers, reactors and harmonic filters.
Evaluate converter performance, DC-link voltage, harmonic spectrum and dynamic reactive power response.
Review control and protection systems, auxiliary supplies, insulation and partial discharge (PD) monitoring.
Analyse thermal trends, event records and system performance during normal and disturbed operating conditions.
Identify converter module degradation, equipment failures and control system obsolescence.
Assess reliability risks, maintenance requirements and lifecycle intervention strategies.
Recommend diagnostic testing, refurbishment, module replacement and control system upgrades.
Prepare technical assessment reports and provide recommendations to improve system reliability and performance.
Mandatory Requirements
Minimum 12+ years of experience in STATCOM, FACTS or power electronics systems.
Strong knowledge of STATCOM/VSC converters, IGBT/GTO technology and DC-link systems.
Experience in converter cooling, harmonic analysis, dynamic VAR compensation and control systems.
Knowledge of converter protection, insulation monitoring, transformers, reactors and auxiliary systems.
Experience in power electronics diagnostics, condition monitoring and failure analysis.
Ability to analyse operational events, thermal trends and dynamic system performance.
Familiarity with EMT simulation tools such as PSCAD/EMTDC or equivalent.
STATCOM OEM training and power-system simulation certification are preferred.
